Kudos to the leadership of the National Football League who this week declined overtures from the Obama administration to serve as shills for their increasingly unpopular health care law (a.k.a “Obamacare). The news comes amidst earlier revelations that Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius had been proactively soliciting support from private organizations to prop up the non-profit group designated to promote the law.
Earlier this week, HHS officials disclosed that they were talking to the NFL, NBA, “and others” (read: NHL and MLB) about possible advertising campaigns.
A spokesman for the NFL told the Washington Post that the league “has no plans to engage in this area and (has) had no substantive contact with the administration.” That is likely Washington speak for “they asked us and we begged off.” Good for you NFL!
On Friday, Republican Senators Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn fired off letters to the heads of six professionals sports organizations urging them not involve their leagues.
“Given the divisiveness and persistent unpopularity of the (health care law), it is difficult to understand why an organization like yours would risk damaging its inclusive and apolitical brand by lending its name to its promotion,”
The letters were sent to the heads of the NFL, Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, Professional Golf Association and NASCAR.
In other articles detailing the government’s engagement with sporting venues, proponents point to the Army (and Air Force) sponsorship of NASCAR. In fact, the military has until recently enjoyed such a partnership going back into the 1970’s and 1980’s when NHRA’s Don “The Snake” Prudhomme proudly emblazoned “ARMY” on his top-fuel dragster. In all cases, one would easily discern that these efforts served to both promote the military branch and use the partnership as a recruiting tool. This is NOT a comparison of apples to apples.
Simply put, the federal government and the bureaucrats at HHS must not be allowed to co-opt professional sports to further an unpopular political mandate. We hold firm in the belief that baseball and other sports will suffer the wrath of their respective fan bases of they allow themselves to become propaganda agents for a government showing less and less restraint. Not no, HELL NO. Keep this crap out of our baseball games!
