Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond helped power the Washington Nationals past the Chicago Cubs 7-3 at Nationals Park on Friday. The Nats and Cubs were tied at two each going into the bottom of the 4th before the Washington offense began to unload on Cubs starter Jeff Samrdzija. Desmond slammed his fifth homerun of the year to left with Adam Laroche on first in the Nats half of the inning. It was Desmond’s 500th career hit.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Nationals tacked on three additional runs when Desmond hit a double to right scoring Ryan Zimmerman. Danny Espinosa subsequently drove in Desmond and LaRoche.
The National claimed their fifth straight victory and improved their record to 20-15 and are 1.5 games behind Atlanta who are playing a west coast road trip.
