After being swept by the Detroit Tigers and going 3-7 on their road trip, the Atlanta Braves limp back to Turner Field for a four-game set with the Washington Nationals, who only picked up one game during the Braves skid by going 4-6 over their last 10 games and remain 2.5 games back.
And it just happens that the Braves run headlong into one of the best rotations in the big leagues. Granted, Stephen Strasburg has a 10.80 ERA in the first inning so far this year and has lost four straight starts, but he’s still Strasburg.
Add to that the fact that the Braves are hitting just .219 with runners in scoring position and lead the National League with 224 strikeouts, and things could get ugly if they don’t put the ball in play.
Luckily for them, Andrelton Simmons is hitting .320 in his last seven games and should see time from the lead-off spot, giving Justin Upton someone on base when he hits. That’s in stark contrast to Freddie Freeman, who has gone 4-for-22 since coming back from the DL on Tuesday.
Ryan Zimmerman is currently on the disabled list, but Wilson Ramos is due to return to the Nats tonight.
Julio Teheran is also coming off his first career quality start last week in Colorado, where he threw 70 of his 90 pitches for strikes.
Tim Hudson will go for his 200th win for the third time on Tuesday.
Monday, 7:10 on SportSouth: Braves RH Julio Teheran (1-0, 5.48 ERA) vs RH Stephen Strasburg (1-4, 3.16 ERA)
