Price Gets 1st Win, Rays Beat White Sox 8-3

By:  Stephen Parsons

The date is April 28, 2013 and reigning AL Cy Young award winner David Price has still yet to record his first win of the season.  He would not leave Chicago without his first win as the Rays offense exploded late, securing Price’s first win of the year.

In the Bottom of the 1st, Adam Dunn blooped a single, scoring Alex Rios, giving Chicago the early 1-0 lead.

In the Top of the 3rd inning, Jose Lobaton took an inside off speed pitch over the right field wall, tying the game at 1.

In the Bottom of the 3rd, the Sox would respond.  Paul Konerko pulled a 3-2 count off speed pitch over the left field wall, this was Konerko’s 4th home run of the season.????????????????????????????

It would be quiet on the scoreboard until the Top of the 6th inning.  Matt Joyce took a full count, and hit a towering drive over the right field wall.  This 2-run home run tied the game at 3.  This was Matt Joyce’s 4th home run of the season.

In the Top of the 8th Ben Zobrist hit a clutch RBI single scoring Rodriguez, giving the Rays a 4-3 lead.  Then Alex Rios would make a fielding error, Ryan Roberts would reach base safely, however both Ben Zobrist and Evan Longoria would score giving the Rays a 6-3 lead.

In the Top of the 9th, the Rays would get some insurance runs in the Top of 9th.  Both Ben Zobrist and Evan Longoria drove in runs extending the lead to 8-3.

The White Sox would have no answer as they would fall.

David Price picked up his 1st win of the season.  He would pitch 7 innings allwing 3 runs on 6 hits.  He struck out 9 hitters while walking 2.  He improves to 1-2 on the season with a 5.21 ERA.

Nathan Jones takes the loss falling to 0-2 on the season with a 3.27 ERA.

Time of the game was 3 hours and 9 minutes.  Game attendance was 22,677.

My Thoughts:

Great job by the Rays on rallying in the 8th inning securing the 1st win for David Price.  Timely hitting by Tampa is their strenghth as they hit 4-8 with runners in scoring positon.

With the win, Tampa improves to 12-13 only 1 game behind .500.

Coming Up Next:

Tampa has tomorrow off, but on Tuesday they will travel to Kansas City where they will face against former Rays pitcher James Shields.  Shields is 1-2 this season with a 3.09 ERA.  The Rays will start Alex Cobb, who has been Tampa’s most consistent pitcher, he is 3-1 with a 1.82 ERA this season.

First pitch on Tuesday will be at 8:10 PM ET from Kauffman Stadium
