Indians ace Justin Masterson entered today’s game with one of the best starts of his career. He was 4-1 so far in 2013, and has been able to put the Indians on his back when they needed a win. That was not the case today as the Indians would fall 9-0 to the 1st place Kansas City Royals.
It all started in the Bottom of the 2nd inning. Jeff Francoeur hit a RBI double scoring Mike Moustakas, giving the Royals a 1-0 lead. Jarrod Dyson would then hit a RBI double to right field, this would score Jeff Francoeur making it a 2-0 game.
In the Bottom of the 4th, it would once again be Jarrod Dyson with a clutch hit. He singled to center field, scoring Mike Moustakas giving the Royals a 3-0 lead.
At this point it was just timely hitting against Masterson giving the Royals the early edge. Very much like his outing against Boston, not giving up the long ball, just clutch hitting getting runs in.
Then the Bottom of the 5th happened where Alcides Escobar hit a solo home run over the left field wall making it a 4-0 Royals lead.
In the Bottom of the 7th, it would be blown wide open. Alcides Escobar hit into a fielder’s choice scoring Chris Getz. Then Eric Hosmer singled on a line drive to right field, scoring Escobar. Then Mike Moustakas drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Billy Butler making it a 7-0 lead.
In the Bottom of the 8th, Alex Gordon hit a 2-run home run to right field, scoring Chris Getz, extending the lead to 9-0 Royals.
Justin Masterson would last 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 7 runs on 9 hits. He did strike out 9, but walked 4.
Former Indians first round draft pick Jeremy Guthrie pitched for Kansas City, going 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 0 runs on 6 hits. He struck out 5 and walked only 3.
Kansas City pitching struck out 10 Cleveland hitters today, including 3 from Ryan Raburn.
Jeremy Guthrie got the win improving to 3-0 this season with a 3.06 ERA. Justin Masterson took the loss, he is now 4-2 this season with a 3.12 ERA.
Time of the game was 2 hours and 44 minutes. Game attendance was 22,001.
I understand this is a much improved Royals team from the pitching side. We know this team can put up runs, but you need to back up your ace. Masterson kept it within reach until the 7th inning. The Indians were 0-8 with runners in scoring position. Need to capitalize when they will make you pay.
Coming Up Next:
Game 2 of the day night double-header will be 8:05 PM ET.
Corey Kluber will make his 1st start of the season for the Indians. He is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA out of the bullpen this season. The Royals have called up left-hander Will Smith to make his first start of the season.
This has been the Parsons Report.
