Shane Victorino and Jackie Bradley Jr. provided offensive support and Red Sox starter Jon Lester provided solid pitching through five innings as a refreshed Boston squad doused the Yankees 8-2 today at Yankee Stadium.
Victorino had three RBI’s and Bradley Jr. starting his first ever Major League game demonstrated exceptional discipline at the plate. The rookie was walked three times and managed to score twice.
Yankees starter C.C. Sabathia allowed Boston to jump ahead with four runs in the top of the 2nd inning and the bombers never recovered. A steady offensive stream provided Boston an additional four runs through the 9th inning.
Boston’s choice to allow Bradley Jr. to open with the club seems to be an indication that they intend to remain competitive this year. The team could have sent him to AAA Pawtucket for at least the first 11 days of this season to guarantee an additional contract year before he was eligible for free-agency.
