On the rise
Toronto Blue Jays
They still haven’t played a meaningful game after Labour Day in 20 years, but Alex Anthopoulos’s remake of the Jays has the approval of Las Vegas bookmakers. Bovada lists them as the 15-4 favourite to win the American League.
New York Yankees
If age isn’t catching up to New York, then injuries are steamrolling the roster. Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira will open the season on the disabled list. The replacements — Travis Hafner, Kevin Youkilis and Vernon Wells — are on the wrong side of their prime. They’re pricey too, though that has never bothered the Yankees.
