Does Anyone Think Jackie Bradley Jr. Doesn’t Deserve a Shot?

bradley jr single54 at Bats in the Spring, a .444 batting average.  Four doubles, a triple, two homers and 11 RBI’s.  Interesting questions for John Farrell and the Red Sox front office.

  1. There is no doubt that Jackie Jr., deserves a spot on Boston’s 25-man roster as the team breaks camp this weekend and heads for the season opener against the Evil Empire. But here’s the thing, and it’s a big thing. My understanding of his contract structure goes something like this: If Boston places him on the opening day roster, they lose a year of team control over his overall contract under the current collective bargaining agreement. If the Bosox ship him to the minors for the first 11-games of this season, they can then call him up and maintain team control of the last year of his contract. So, despite his gaudy numbers, it makes long-term sense to ship him to Pawtuckett for two weeks where he can get some AB’s. If last season is any indication (where due to injury we started something like 17 different players in the outfield) Jackie will get his shot before the Memorial Day weekend.
